The AIRAID 100-211 universal performance air filter can turn up the performance on a custom build.

Shortly after the turn of the 20th century, automobiles, airplanes, and airships (giant blimps) were turning the world on its preverbal ear. Gasoline engines were "powering the future", but the technology was truly in its infancy. To make lots of horsepower, you had to burn lots of gas. Most airplane and airship engines of the period were massive things, with 4-6 cylinders that displaced 20-40 liters. Output was only around 200-300-hp, but the torque was mind-warping. By contrast, most car engines at the time only made 20-50-hp, and terminal velocity was around 45-50 mph. To make faster cars, daredevils would shoehorn an aero engine into a lightweight road car chassis, complete with chain drive, and brakes that only "suggested" a change in pace. Many of these fire breathing 'aero cars' managed to set crazy land speed records. Like the 21.5L (1,312ci) 200-hp Blitzen Benz, which roared up to 142 mph---in 1911. Ken Thwaits plans to attend every Optima Series Race for the 2016 Season

Advice, research, testing, and a good team are important tools that have helped Thwaits achieve his undefeated title

Optima’s Search for the Ultimate Street Car Race Series inspires racers across the country for various reasons.  Some racers attend this series for the sake of saying they did it while others come out to defend a title.

We last checked-in with AIRAID driver Ken Thwaits after his first win at Optima’s Thunderhill Raceway Park event in February.  Thwaits had successfully taken the win with his 2014 Camaro Z28 in the GT Class, while also earning him a spot to compete at the season finale race, the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational (OUSCI) at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.  This invitation was one of a hundred that will be handed out through the 2016 race season.  The ten event series will lead into the final race in November, which will determine who has the ultimate street car.  Winning an event throughout the year is a huge accomplishment, however many racers use these ten events to prep for the final showdown immediately following SEMA.

Though Ken Thwaits’ initial goal was to secure his invite into the Optima Invitational, Thwaits had an additional vision in mind.  As the 2014 Optima Season Points Champion, Thwaits had to surrender his title in 2015 to driver Kyle Tucker of Detroit Speed and Engineering.  The overall points champion recognizes a driver that not only attends almost, if not all, of the Optima Series events across the country, they earn points throughout the year depending on where they rank at each event.  When the series comes to an end, points are accumulated for each driver and the overall winner is declared at the SEMA Show.

Thwaits is off to a great start in his mission to become the overall points champion.  With three Optima Series events in the books and a fourth on its way, Thwaits has placed first in the GT class at each event.  With the NCM Motorsports Park Race taking place in Bowling Green, Kentucky, this coming weekend, Thwaits has been shaking down both his 2014 Camaro and the 2006 Mitsubishi EVO before leaving the Showtime Motorsports stables in Nashville and heading to NCM Motorsports Park.

While Thwaits focuses on accumulating points, many other competitors are still racing for an invite into OUSCI.  With seven events left before November, there is still time for drivers to win their way into the final race, though competition will continue to get harder as time runs out.

As Thwaits preps for this weekend’s coming race, the AIRAID driver will have some tough competition ahead.  Rain during the last Optima race at New Jersey Motorsports Park event created some obstacles as many drivers struggled to get a couple clean and fast laps recorded before the rain hit.  Thwaits was one of those drivers who knew that the few laps he had before the rain needed to count in order to maintain his title and accumulate the most points possible at that event.  Thwaits accomplished just that, winning his third GT Class title.

Chevrolet’s mid-size trucks from the mid-90s to mid-2000s may not have been the fanciest vehicles in the world, nor were they the most powerful, but GM S-10 pickups, Blazers, Jimmys, and Sonomas have served their owners with remarkable reliability thanks in no small part to the 4.3L V-6 engine. These trucks have been depended on for many years for everything from taking the kids to school to weekend camping trips, and they also remain a staple among mini-truck enthusiasts. The 4.3L V-6 is no slouch in the power department, but there’s always more power available under the hood. To feed the need for more power, AIRAID has developed a quick-fit Cold Air Dam system that frees up additional power in 1996-2005 GM mid-size trucks and SUVs. A simple bolt-on upgrade, the AIRAID system allows the engines in these trucks to breathe easier and run more efficiently.

The 200-133 quick-fit system uses the 700-433 performance cone-style air filter to maximize available airflow to the engine. The 700-433 includes traditional oiled filter media, but the kit is also available with SynthaMax dry filters in red, blue, or black.

The AIRAID Cold Air Dam system works by targeting the most restrictive portion of the factory intake system: the air box and air filter. New Cold Air Dam panels replace the upper portion of the factory intake box. They snap into the lower half of the factory intake box, enabling the system to retain the use of the factory cold air inlet duct in the fenderwell. Weatherstripping is positioned on top of the CAD panels that seals against the hood when it is closed; the system uses the hood as the “lid” for the air box. These panels keep the filter isolated from hot engine compartment air while also adding a forward-facing area for additional cool outside air to reach the filter. The panels connect to the factory intake tube and MAF sensor, making for a simple bolt-on installation with no drilling, trimming, or other modifications needed. The design also enables the vehicle to easily be returned to stock if desired.

To further enhance filtration and extend service intervals, AIRAID recommends adding a 799-430 pre-filter to the kit, especially if the vehicle is regularly used in dirty, dusty environments, such as unpaved roads and general off-road use.

The heart of the system is the AIRAID premium filter, which improves airflow without sacrificing filtration. The AIRAID cone-style performance filter offers more surface area for filter media compared to the factory flat-panel paper filter, which means the filter is capable of flowing more air. The AIRAID quick-fit system for mid-size Chevy and GM trucks is available with four different filters. The 200-133 system includes a red filter with AIRAID’s SynthaFlow oiled filter media, while the 201-233 system includes a red filter with AIRAID’s SynthaMax dry filter media that does not require oil. The 202-233 system includes a SynthaMax dry filter in black. These filters filter the same and flow within 5% of one another, so the best filter to use really depends on personal preference.
