The C/K designation for Chevrolet and GMC pickups has been out of use for 18 years now, so it’s likely that some younger enthusiasts and even some older ones aren’t exactly certain to what the designation refers.

The C/K was Chevrolet and GMC's full-size pickup truck line from 1960 until 1998 in the United States, replaced by the Silverado and Sierra names at Chevrolet and GMC, respectively.

The 1960 model year introduced a new body style of light pickup truck with a number of innovations. One was the drop-center ladder frame, allowing the cab to fitted lower, and independent front suspension. Also new for 1960 was a new designation system for trucks made by GM. A new scheme assigned a 10, 20, or 30 for 1/2, 3/4, and 1-ton models, preceded by a C (conventional) in front of the series number which indicates a two-wheel rear drive model while a K denotes one equipped with four-wheel drive.

The second generation C/K ran from 1967 – 1972. While the front suspension on all Chevrolet C-Series trucks were independent front suspension with coil springs, they now came with a coil spring trailing arm rear suspension, which greatly improved ride over the previous leaf springs.

Over the past few years, interest in older trucks as hot rod conversions has grown. The outlandish prices of most muscle cars has something to do with it, but also trucks are exceedingly easy to work on and modify. Further many of the components you find in a truck of this era are either the same or swap right out for parts from their muscle car brethren.

As an example on the extreme end, let’s check out the 1970 C-10 built by Chad Anderson for this year’s SEMA Show. Chad owns Catalyst Customs, a shop in Phoenix, Arizona, that specializes in custom bike, car, and truck modifications and stellar paint work. As it was pushed into the shop for the work to begin, the C-10 appreared to only have rust holding it together.

Chad and his crew stripped the C-10 down to the very last nut, bolt, and bracket. While hardware was replaced, the brackets were media blasted and powder coated.

The bed itself was replaced by a custom-built unit, made to tilt to the rear. The floor was bead-rolled and massive tubs were fabricated for the giant-sized rear wheels. Under the bed is a narrowed 9” Ford rear axle.

Suspension is by air spring all around. Front suspension is a complete independent set-up from Choppin’ Block and all four corners are mounted to Air Ride suspension units. The suspension is controlled via an AccuAir Suspension management system. Out on each corner is a 24" American Racing billet wheel wrapped in Toyo tires.

Under the hood lurks a fresh GM LS1 with mild cam, upgraded to better LS6 injectors, valve springs and push rods. Drawing plenty of clean, fresh air into the engine is a 101-400 AIRAID Custom Air Intake Kit, that provides all the components a builder may require to install an intake on their truck. All up, the motor now produces a very impressive 470 horsepower.

When you look across the interior, you get a sense of attention to detail that’s such an enormous part of this build. For example, check out the flush mounted glass, the flush mounted custom sun roof, the one off taillights created just for this build, or the effort put into enlarging the grille area to fit the grille from another model year. On the inside, there are Fesler door panels and TMI seats upholstered in black vinyl and suede with green stitching.

And speaking of green, check out that exterior color. It’s an amazing new offering from the House of Kolor called Lime Mist Green with some contrasting Galaxy Gray finished off nicely with a Rylan Red pinstripe.

Like all of AIRAID’s MXP-Series Intake Kits, no special tuning is required and the installation is a simple bolt-on procedure.

The AIRAID system starts with a real carbon fiber 4.25” diameter intake tube. This is not some cheap imitation piece; it is real carbon fiber that adds a show-quality look to the engine compartment. It features a velocity stack to increase airflow and incorporates a special billet plate that accepts the factory MAF sensor. The Intake Tube connects to AIRAID’s one-piece roto-molded Cold Air Box via a urethane “hump hose” and stainless steel clamps. The box is designed to keep hot engine compartment air away from the filter while increasing the amount of cold air available and even utilizes the factory cold air scoop.

Originally introduced five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year, the Ford Mustang ushered in the era of the “pony car” also known as the “muscle car.” Soon after its initial success Chevrolet, American Motors, and Chrysler released their own versions that included the Camaro, Firebird, Javelin, Barracuda, and Challenger. The Mustang is also identified as the car that inspired the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri.

A 200-cubic inch six-cylinder engine that delivered 101-horsepower and a 260-cubic inch V8 that produced 164-horsepower were available to power the initial models. However, the car was upgraded in time for the traditional opening of the 1965 model year to include two new engines - a modification of the six-cylinder, which offered a boost to 120-horsepower and an enhanced V8 that jumped the horsepower to 210.

Starting in 1969, Ford added new performance and decorative options including functional and non-functional air scoops, cable and pin hood tie downs, wing and chin spoilers. Performance packages were also unveiled including the Mach 1, the Boss 302, and Boss 429.

The fifth generation started off with a redesigned model that was similar to the late 1960s styling. A cast-iron block 4.0-liter SOHC V6 engine delivered 210-horsepower and an aluminum block 4.6-liter SOHC 3-valve Modular V8 with variable camshaft timing produced 300-horsepower for the GT.

The 2010 version went through an exterior enhancement that included sequential LED taillights and the introduction of a revised 4.6-liter V8 that produced 315-horsepower at 6000 rpm and 325-lb-ft of torque at 4255 rpm. This Mustang also featured new spring rates and dampers, traction and stability control system that was standard on all models.

A new 3.72-liter aluminum block V6 engine that weighed 40-pounds less than the previous version was introduced to power the 2011 Mustang. The engine delivered 305-horsepower and 280-lb-ft of torque. It featured 24 valves and Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing and a new dual exhaust. GT models got its boost from a 32-valve 5.0-liter engine that produced 412-horsepower and 390-lb-ft of torque.

The AIRAID 451-745 Jr kit is designed for the 2011 to 2014 Mustang with the 3.7-liter V6 engine. It is constructed to replace the factory intake tube and paper filter to create a straighter path for clean airflow to reach the engine.

The intake kit includes the AIRAID 851-500 dry synthetic direct-fit replacement filter and low restriction polyethylene intake tube. The washable and reusable air filter features a two-layer media of SYNTHAMAX® material. The inner filter media has two distinct layers featuring synthetic materials that have separate performance characteristics. The outer layer made of synthetic needle felt polyester material catches contaminants. The inner layer of wet-laid/chemical bonded rayon and polyester captures any contaminants that may have penetrated the first layer.

AIRAID offers an air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to cleanse and recharge the air filter after each 30,000 to 50,000 miles of normal driving. So if you properly clean the filter when you are supposed to, then it will perform for the lifetime of your vehicle.

The air intake is custom made to fit 2011 to 2014 Mustangs. It is easy to install using common hand tools. Drilling is not required.

AIRAID Offers Air Intake Tubes for You Build It DIYers

Whether you are a car enthusiast who wants to achieve better performance from your car or whether you are a car enthusiast who wants to build a high performance car from scratch, AIRAID offers a variety of air intake components perfect for completing the task.

If you are inquiring about an air intake system, then you probably know what they do. However, for the small chance that you don’t, the air intake system draws air into the engine to assist in giving the proper balance of air/fuel mixture and the best possible performance and fuel mileage. The system includes a mass airflow sensor that monitors the amount of air that goes into the engine and controls the amount of fuel that is mixed with that air. That data is fed to the car’s computer, which serves as the power control module balancing everything out to ensure the best possible performance and fuel mileage of the engine.

You need to be certain that the air filter is clean. So it is advised that you check it every time you change the oil. AIRAID air filters are included in AIRAID air intake component kits and can be washed and reused. So there is no need to buy another filter when you discover that it is too dirty to perform properly. AIRAID also offers air filter cleaning kits that are formulated to clean the filter so that it can be reused.

If you want to construct an air intake system for your car, you may want to start off with the AIRAID 100-025 UBI (you build it) air intake tube set. This one-piece air intake tube includes a variety of bends and straight pipes you need to construct the intake piping for a custom air intake system. The 2-1/2-inch outside diameter one-piece free-flowing tube is roto-molded and can be cut to lengths or bends your project requires.

30°, 45°, 60° and 90° tube bends have been accomplished on the polyurethane tube that has a total weight of 5 pounds. You just measure off the size you need and cut off the piece.

AIRAID universal air filter designed to work with the 100-025 UBI air intake tube include the AIRAID 700-540.

The AIRAID 700-540 is a high performance, high airflow tapered conical air filter that is designed to boost horsepower and torque of the engine. Featuring multiple layers of cotton gauze and non-woven synthetic media and AIRAID’s filtration technology, this filter will efficiently block dirt particles in a way that ordinary cotton-gauze filters are unable to do. The flange inside diameter is 2.5-inches (65mm) making it ideal for the 100-025 tube. Its base outside diameter and large end diameter are 5.375-inches (137mm). Moreover, it is washable and reusable. If properly cleansed when necessary, this filter could be the only one you will ever own.

AIRAID offers intake tubes in a variety of sizes including 3-inches 100-300, 3.5-inches 100-350, 4-inches 100-400, 5-inches 100-500, and 6-inches 100-600.

Air intake tube bends available include 60° on a tube with a 3-inch or 6-inch outside diameter or 30° on a tube with 5-inch outside diameter.

There are also three AIRAID custom air intake UBI master kits that include a variety of hardware to make construction of a “you build it” air intake professional in appearance and performance.

The UBI custom air intake master kit I includes air intake tubing, coupler, hump hose, reducer, brackets, hose clamps, and hardware. There are six kits in this group. Two feature a 3-inch diameter tube with a filter flange of 3-inches and a 9-inch or 6-inch long air filter 101-301 or 101-302. Two include a 3-1/2-inch diameter tube and 3-1/2-inch filter flange and a 9-inch or 6-inch long air filter 101-351 or 101-352. One kit consists of a 4-inch diameter tube, 9-inch filter flange and a 9-inch long air filter 101-401. One kit contains a 5-inch diameter tube, 5-inch filter flange and a 9-inch long air filter, 101-501.

The UBI Custom Air Intake Master Kit II includes air intake tube, coupler, hump hose, reducer, brackets, hose clamps, hardware and air filter adapter. Three kits are available in this group. 101-300 has a 3-inch diameter tube, a 6-inch filter flange a 9-inch long air filter. The second, 101-350, consists of a 3-1/2-inch diameter tube, 6-inch filter flange, and a 9-inch long air filter. The third kit, 101-400 contains a 4-inch diameter tube, 6-inch filter flange, and a 9-inch long air filter.
